Sierra Leone was finally declared Ebola-free on 17 March 2016 and the country is now struggling to rebuild its shattered health system.
Access to medical care was already limited before the Ebola epidemic, and it is estimated that around 10 per cent of the country’s health professionals were among the 3,950 people killed by the virus.
Before the epidemic, Sierra Leone had some of the worst health indicators in the world, especially for maternal and child mortality.
In Tonkolili district, we support the paediatric ward, maternity and neonatal services and the blood transfusion laboratory at Magburaka district hospital, and also assist Magburaka mother and child health post with staff and supplies.
We also provide emergency obstetric care in a community health centre in Yoni Chiefdom (Hinistas)
